The Shoalhaven area of NSW is full of wonderful sights, sounds and places. It is the location of 'Bundanon' - a farm built on aboriginal homelands, later an artist's residence and now an arts bequest. A special place of wonderful sights and sounds .. hidden valleys, rain forest, an island, settler remnants, old homestead - are all circumscribed by the Shoalhaven river and rock escarpment .. long associated with Indigenous peoples, now with artists, writers and musicians; is located 160km south of Sydney.

Peter Mumme lived there during 2001/2, recording many environment sounds and composing music in response to these sounds - and this special place. This recording is a gentle and colourful introduction to more of the wonderful nature sounds of Australia - and the music inspired by them. Shoalhaven draws upon nature’s sounds and environments to produce most approachable new music.

The work is laid out as a series of ‘walks’ - through a rain forest, around rock escarpments, into hidden magic places, around the old ‘bundanon’ homestead, close to night-time dams - depicting some of the feelings of release and exhilaration experienced whilst there. Hear the sounds of black cockatoos, mudlarks, wrens, scissors-grinder, bower birds and kookaburras, thunder and rain storms, evening wind gently blowing through casuarina trees; sometimes merged with responsive and meditative music, sometimes existing as musical pieces in their own right.

What is essentially ‘local’ music and sound becomes universal - through the compositional (reflective) process - in the same way as we all add our own individual voices and actions to the greater ‘us'.
